Brisbane’s health innovation sector has received another boost, with a new investor network connecting promising life sciences and MedTech companies with the capital and expertise needed to grow and take their innovations global.
Launched today at AusBiotech International 2026, in partnership with Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA), the Australian Life Science Angels Network (ALSAN) is a new member-led investor community within AngelLoop, bringing together investors with scientific, clinical and commercial expertise to back emerging health innovations and help promising ideas progress towards real-world impact.
The new network complements BEDA's MedTech Initiative Global Accelerator, which has helped more than 40 companies raise $391 million in capital and create more than 315 jobs since launching, strengthening Brisbane's pipeline of investment-ready health and life sciences businesses.
AngelLoop has already invested in 11 MedTech Initiative alumni, demonstrating growing investor confidence in Brisbane's health innovation sector and the opportunities emerging from its pipeline of high-potential companies working to improve health outcomes for patients and communities.
This national network is open to both seasoned life sciences investors and the "biocurious" – those interested in backing emerging health innovations, supported by a community of experienced investors and industry experts.
ALSAN Convenor and AngelLoop Investor, Dr. Chris Booth said Life science investing brings together scientific, clinical and commercial questions.
“ALSAN gives investors a community in which to explore those questions, share diligence and learn from people with complementary expertise," Dr Booth said.
“We are growing the pool of investment backing early-stage Australian life sciences. We welcome experienced investors and the biocurious, including those interested in investing but unsure where to start. Members can learn from other’s experience in the life sciences sector and early-stage investment.
For startups, this means connections to investors who bring early capital, expertise, and mentoring.
“The ALSAN brand is new, but builds on early-stage investor networks already active in Australia and especially within AngelLoop.”
Brisbane Economic Development Agency CEO Anthony Ryan said Brisbane already had strong health and life sciences capabilities, with growing opportunities to translate that strength into global success.
"Brisbane has no shortage of big ideas or brilliant innovators. We have the talent, research and capability here, and the opportunity is to continue strengthening the capital and connections that help our innovators grow and compete globally, while delivering solutions that can improve lives," Mr Ryan said.
"Brisbane is already producing exciting health innovations and high-potential companies. We want to see more of them find the investment, support and expertise they need to scale from Brisbane and become global success stories.
“Access to capital is critical to making that happen, and ALSAN is another important piece of the puzzle, connecting Brisbane’s innovators with the investors, expertise and networks they need to grow.”
Brisbane-based Convergence Medical is one example of the type of company benefitting from stronger investor networks and commercialisation pathways.
Convergence Medical Founder and CEO Chris Jeffery, whose Brisbane-based MedTech company is developing a world-first surgical robot for orthopedic procedures, said the establishment of a dedicated life sciences investment network within AngelLoop would open more doors for Brisbane's emerging health technology businesses.
"Having benefited firsthand from AngelLoop's investment network, I know how valuable it is to have the right people backing your business, particularly when you're navigating the challenges of bringing new medical technology to market,” Dr. Jeffery said.
"Creating a dedicated life sciences community within AngelLoop means more investors who understand our industry, more opportunities for local businesses to access capital and expertise, and ultimately more Brisbane innovations reaching global markets.
"It's an exciting step for Brisbane's MedTech sector and for the next generation of founders looking to turn their ideas into successful businesses."
