Brisbane set to host new Touch Rugby League competitions

4 JUNE 2019

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner today joined Touch Rugby League (TRL) ambassador Darren Lockyer to announce that Brisbane will be the host city for TRL’s showcase events in 2019/20.

In 2019, the TRL World Cup and State of Origin will be held in July, before the TRL Australian Championships take place in October.

Cr Schrinner said Brisbane is a city that loves its sport, and hosting TRL’s showcase events was a natural fit for the city.

“TRL was born here in Brisbane, and now it is one of the fastest growing sports in Australia that is being played from North Queensland down to Melbourne,” Cr Schrinner said.

“The events are set to bring together the best players from around Australia for two events which will showcase the sport’s elite level of competition.

“The city will provide a friendly welcome, and ensure players and officials have the best possible experience of their time in the city – even if they’re from New South Wales.

“Hosting these TRL events is a win for Brisbane. The city is committed to bringing more major events to Brisbane, which have a significant impact on our local economy and deliver flow-on economic benefits for Brisbane’s tourism, retail and hospitality sectors.

“I wish all players and teams the best of luck in the TRL World Cup and State of Origin and the TRL National Championships.”

TRL Australia General Manager of Franchises & Events Edward Wilson said with Brisbane being a heartland of Touch Rugby League, it serves as a perfect destination to host our showpiece events, both on and off the field.

"Brisbane, as Australia's new World City, resonates significantly with what we are striving to achieve as a sport. To be inclusive, global driven and create an environment that is attractive to all that play and spectate,” Mr Wilson said.

"Brisbane is the preferred destination for all participants and spectators. Whether it is the national parks or nightlife, there is something for everyone to be a part of and experience whilst in Queensland's capital”

The TRL World Cup and State of Origin will take place 4 - 7 July 2019, set to be held at Wynnum-Manly Seagulls Rugby League Club, North Brisbane Rugby Union Club and the Valley Hockey Club grounds.

The TRL Australian Championships will take place on 4 - 6 October 2019 at North Brisbane Rugby Union Club and the Valley Hockey Club grounds.
